Panerai watch company was founded in Florence (Italy) in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai. The small workshop became family business: Giovanni was succeeded by his son, Leon Francesco. The company was kept secret for more than 100 years because it became the official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy.
The Italian brand became known due to special timepieces for military divers. They were in need for a water-resistant watch with greatly readable indications in the full darkness and in a very muddy water.
Soon after securing such an important order Panerai presented its special model Radiomir. It was unique due to its water-resistance and exceptional reliability due to a hand-winding mechanism produced by Rolex.
They chose a black dial and luminous markings and hands.
In the beginning of 1950 the model Radiomir was substituted by Luminor. Though Luminor had the same case and dial as Radiomir, the watch also had an 8-days power reserve and what is very important: they substituted Radiomir radioactive luminescent material by the safe one and the model was named Luminor.
An interesting fact is that there was not any inscription besides numerals on the dial not to determine the state affiliation by a watch during secret military operations.
